The Montessori-ish days run on Wednesdays and Thursdays during term time and can suit children aged 8+ whose parents work, or those who are simply looking to compliment their educational provision with something a little different.
Rooted in Montessori philosophy, the beginning of the academic year revolves around the 5 Great Lessons; underpinning key cultural, historical and scientific learning, re-written for this generation and delivered from a secular viewpoint. There is a story and activity offered at each session and further materials are demonstrated regularly, so that the children get used to choosing whatever work they wish to work with in this child-lead learning environment.
Many children also choose to take advantage of having a regular group to work with and plan bigger, collaborative projects. From organising charity fundraiser events (advertising, performance and market stalls) to dramatising and performing Ancient Greek myths (script writing, prop and costume making, set design) and being involved in planning regular, larger events we are keen to nurture collaboration, kindness and inclusivity. Regular ‘meeting time’ keeps us aware of others’ views and feelings and present opportunities for suggestions to be discussed and solutions reached for. Lunchtimes are spent outdoors (in the park or the woods; walking, kite flying, foraging, litter picking, chatting and playing), come rain or shine.
The Thursday Montessori-ish group will additionally have a morning focus of maths; a time ring-fenced for students to be guided individually or in small groups with a material and process to investigate further. We use a combination of authentic Montessori manipulatives, modern resources and other hands-on materials before board games and other child-lead activities start.
The Wednesday Montessori-ish group will additionally benefit from book-study in the morning; a ringfenced time to read together and discuss themes, ideas and characters. Together we will dive into 3 great classics of literature and enjoy a selection of styles and genres together, scrap-book/portfolio making before the day’s more child-lead activities start. Required: children will need copies of the 3 books and a A4/A3 sketchbook to work in.
📕 The Boy at the Back of the Class- through the eyes of a 9 year old reaching an understanding of the plight of refugees; a story of kindness and friendship.
📕 Gaffer Samson’s Luck- a story of deep, inter-generational friendships, bravery and identity, set in The Fens.
📕 Arctic Star- a fictional story set following three teenage navy recruits during WW2.
